Two matches. That is the entire data set I have to evaluate a 1.88-metre centre-back who has just been granted Vietnamese citizenship. I sat in the stand and watched the way Luong Chi Khai — or Kyle Colonna, depending on which passport you are holding — positioned himself inside the box. He stood there with the bearing of a man who already knew where the ball would land. He jumped roughly half a beat before the opposing striker. Half a beat, in football, is sometimes an entire career.

Then I went back to the footage. Two starts. One goal. About twelve headed contacts from set pieces. That is what I saw. The rest — the story of a Viet kieu centre-back who will patch up the national team defence at the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 — is what others are writing on his behalf, with expectation rather than with footage.

The naturalisation decision was published on the President's official information portal. For Vietnamese football, that is an administrative milestone. For The Cong Viettel, it is a contract.

Luong Chi Khai was born in the United States in 2026; his mother is of Vietnamese origin. He grew up inside the American football system and played for New Mexico United in USL League One — the third tier of the US pyramid. In August 2026 he joined Hanoi FC. A naturalised centre-back's starting place depends on how he differs, more than on whether he is better. The FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 kicks off in September 2026. The difference between an average V.League centre-back and one good enough for the national team lies in reading the situation before the ball reaches the opposing striker's feet — something two matches cannot measure.

Based on my experience covering matches, I have watched him in aerial phases. Good leap. Sensible positioning. What I have not seen is him facing a short, quick Southeast Asian forward who changes direction constantly. That is the profile he will meet at the ASEAN Cup. How a 1.88-metre centre-back rotates against that profile is a question USL League One footage cannot answer.

Resources are stable thanks to state ownership and a strong academy. And here is where I want to pause. A right-footed centre-back, when most modern defensive systems want a left-footed left-sided centre-back to pass into the left channel. The national team is the same. If Kim Sang-sik switches to a back three in order to squeeze Luong Chi Khai into the line-up, that is something quite different from a tactical advance. A back three in modern football is often how a coach insures his own reputation after his back four has been punctured. Adding a centre-back does not make a defence stronger. It only blurs responsibility.

Now to the part where I could be wrong.

I said two matches is far too small a sample to conclude anything. But a small sample also means I cannot rule out that he is genuinely good. A player who could not break into Hanoi FC's team may simply have been a poor fit for that system. That says very little about ability.
